Video Games: Art or to be forgotten?
Q. Recent discussions have appeared all over the interwebz and gaming magazines concerning the immortality of certain games. Critics have claimed that games are a childish form of entertainment and will never be considered an art form. So, my question to you, how do you stand on this issue? If you think games are art, please list three examples and explain your self. If not, please list your reasons. Being a VG board, I know I'll get more support than rejection, but still, I wanna see Y!'s opinion. I think video games not only can be, but in some cases ARE art already. Examples: 1. Mass Effect-The epic story of Commander Shepard and his/her crew is a weaving tale that is as deep as it is entertaining. The character development,… [cont.]

A. Yes, I would say they are that, but their real potential just hasn't been brought out as far as being for mature audiences goes. The critics are adult people, who are criticizing other adult people who play video games, right? I am drawing that conclusion anyway. It really does seem like video games are stuck in some sort of "baby sitter" stage. Probably most video game sales have to do with parents buying their kids video games to keep them humored and out of their hair throughout the day (that is what I mean when I say "baby sitter" anyway). Most video games made seem to be aimed at kids or teenage boys. And games rated M for mature are just teenage boy type games with an extra dose of violence/gore, sexual content, or foul language… [cont.]

A. What follows are two articles from Grove Dictionary of Art Database online. They answer many of the questions you listed above. A third webpage on a timeline of Art Nouveau may be found here: I hope this information is helpful. It was provided by a librarian in Pittsburgh PA. Art Nouveau 1. Introduction. Art Nouveau has been held to have had its beginnings in 1894 or 1895. A more appropriate date would be 1884, the year the progressive group Les XX was founded in Belgium, and the term was used in the periodical that supported it, Art Moderne: we are believers in Art Nouveau . A. I think you are aiming a little too low. You should have at least 1 or 2 Ivy or near Ivy schools on your list. Harvard, Brown, Stanford, Georgetown, Penn, etc. You may not get in, but you're in the ballpark. Reach: William and Mary, Brown, Georgetown Midrange: Smith, Holy Cross, Wellesley, Vanderbilt, UMD (since you are out of state) Safety: Bryn Mawr, St. Mary, JMU You should aim for at least 2-3 of each. I don't think 1 safety is enough, the college admit thing can surprise you. Also check out collegedata.com. You don't seem to realize how strong an applicant you are.

Summer art class for kids ideas...recycled art projects?
Q. My daughter asked to enroll in a summer art program, and I agreed because it was very low cost (money is tight until after I start getting paid after returning from layoff for a month). Here's the catch: After she signed up, we found out that it was a class in "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" projects. They want the students to basically bring in a set number of art projects ideas for the first class, and then each student will bring in materials for those that are selected! I think it's great and all...a nice idea for summer projects that can be given out as gifts by the kids later on in the year...but they each need ideas for at least five projects (preferably ten), a list of materials needed, and step-by-step instructions! Suggestions in starting a high school art club?
Q. I am a sophomore in high school, and I am thinking about starting an art club at my school. The meetings will be held weekly after school and open to everyone. We will hopefully be doing the activities listed below. What are some suggestions and tips, especially regarding the first few meetings? I don't know what to do or say in the first meeting. I don't want to make people go away; rather, I want to attract more and more members. I was thinking we could do some community service, such as: Participating in The Memory Project and and Books of Hope (done by My Class Cares) | | Making and selling art and donate the proceeds to our school or a charity as well as some typical art club activities like making art during club meetings, [cont.]

Would the new original art version of Obelisk the Tormentor be legal?
Q. I have gotten the original art Obelisk the Tormentor in Jump magazine a while back and noticed a few things. I know that the god cards are banned because they have a "hidden" effect. That effect being properly assigned to each one and can only be recited by memory making them banned. Such as using a Japanese card in the American nationals. However, since the original art obelisk is the only god card that shows it's effect and not on the official banned list does it make it legal to have it in a deck or no?

A. Well, on the bottom left of the God Cards, it says "This Card cannot be used in a Duel". But the new Obelisk Card, with the Effect on it, is tournament legal because there is a stated effect on this Card, and its colored correctly.

A. You can design your studio the way you want. You need to keep in mind that you are renting and do not want to make any drastic changes. Painting and adding some different furniture will greatly improve your place. There are shows you can watch to get ideas from, such as: This old house, Clean House( this is an awesome show and Mark Brunette is the interior designer) you can learn a lot from this one particular show. You can go to your home improvement stores that have DIY presentations, there are a lot of different things you can learn from. For your furniture, go to a furniture store and look at the sets in person, you will know which one when you see it. I prefer earth tone colors but some people like bold colors. A. First, when you distribute a publication to only about 300 people, you don't call it a magazine--you call it a newsletter. This is usually something simple--typed on your word processor, ginned up with some illustrations, clip art, nice fonts or whatever, and edited for spelling and content by someone who knows how to write for such things, and then printed at your local Kinko's or CopyPrint Center. You will find a great range of prices for printing, so get what you can get as cheaply as you can get it. Take samples of your newsletter/zine to local printers, tell them how many, ask what they offer and how much. To distribute the publication, you can do several things. (1) you can mail it, first class. This will cost you a minimum of 42… [cont.]

Asked by purplepurplesage - Fri Jun 29 00:14:44 2007 - - 0 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I actually did this with a travel idea. You need a few people that can sell advertising. You need a couple people that can design ads and layout effectively a magazine. You need to find a printer that can manage printing your newspaper/magazine You will need to determine approximately how many pages it will be, figure how many issues you will have printed (most have a min of 5000). You want to use a 50-50 (Content-Advertising) ratio. So - if you are doing 24 pages (always in multiple of 4), then 12 will be advertising. Say you do 10,000 copies and it costs $3000 to print. Your base cost is $3000/12 - or $250 per full page. Now - your salespeople will need to earn an income as well - and you want to make a profit. So - take your $2 [cont.]
