Northanger Abbey is a hilarious parody of 18th century gothic novels. The heroine, 17-year old Catherine, has been reading far too many "horrid" gothic novels and would love to encounter some gothic-style terror but the superficial ...

What are the similarities between Jane Austen and Emma Woodhouse?
Q. For a project, I need to know how Jane Austen's life is reflected in Emma's life. (Emma from Jane Austen's novel, EMMA, obviously). Besides them both living in the same time period, what else is the same? Pleaseee help! I seem to only be able to find the differences in the two women's lives! =(

A. Austen had trouble finding love as she was very clever and mature for her age. Her wit and intelligence is not appreciated. This is Emma's situation as well. Both women are bored with their situations in life; the constraints of being women in 19th Century England, etc.

Why do authors such as Jane Austen and the Brontes miss out place names?
Q. I've noticed that in both Jane Austen novels and "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" by Anne Bronte, which I'm currently reading, names of places are frequently replaced by dashes. For example, "--- shire", or talk of a picnic being at "--- cliffs". This has always puzzled me. Does anyone have an explanation?

A. Another reason could have been that people were not as "well-travelled" in the time the Brontes and Jane Austen, so rather than feed their readers mis-information, which can be really irritating, they missed out the names so that the reader could place the characters somewhere familiar to them. As another answerer has said, if you are engrossed in the story, it doesn't really matter where it is set, but mis-information does bug me, and would stop me reading to story.
