Is there a (fairly) comprehensive list of magazines etc. where I can send short stories?
Q. I've got a few short stories written, and I'd like to start submitting them for publication. Is there a website where I can find a list of a host of available UK and Ireland magazines/websites/e-zine s? I'm looking for something along the lines of I've located a number of magazines in my local library that I've submitted to, but so far it's pretty much been a case of find-them-at-random.

Tips for freelance writers?
Q. I consider myself a freelance writer because I do a play review at least monthly for a blog and cover a festival for a newspaper every year... but that's it. How can I get myself out there? Magazines, e-zines, local columns, something for SOMEONE who will actually pay?

A. I've been freelancing for years and I'd say there are businesses out there who will PAY for your skills. You can sign up with plenty of legit freelancing sites online ( for free ), build a portfolio, and bid for work. Many businesses are taking their route online and there is a rise in demand for bloggers, writers, and social media people. You can also use your writing works as samples, since 100% of clients out there will want to see what you can do - before hiring you to write. Depending on the scope of a writing gig, you can get paid a minimum of US$5 per hour to $40. Just learn how to set your rates right before you apply for a job. Good Luck!

Are webzines respectable ways to break into the writing world?
Q. I ask because I'm an unpublished writer who wants to build up a bit of a portfolio. I'm half finished with my first novel and have a few short story ideas that I'm going to start writing this week. I've been looking online for magazines that are accepting short story submissions, and have found a lot of e-zines. The last time I was interested in the short story market was a couple of years ago, and back then it was kind of laughed at to have your story published online. Is that still the case? My preference is still old-fashioned print, but I'm willing to be open-minded, as long as it will look good on my writing resume. Also, if anyone has links for some fantasy markets (short stories) I'd appreciate it. I joined writersmarket.com and was… [cont.]

A. I would be very careful publishing anything online if I were you. The internet is a vastly huge place, and growing larger everyday; despite copyright laws, many writers still have their works plaguerized and stolen. As a result of this, most publishing companies find it irksome to deal with works first published online; it's too much of a hassle for them to hunt it down and see if it has been used by anyone else. Take caution in publishing online.
