A. I've always liked Piano Today. The editors include lots of unknown works by major composers, as well as more well-known compositions. The articles are insightful and I always find something new to learn. It's a great resource if you're looking to expand your repertoire.

Q. I heard that some magazines or newspapers write on a 7th grade level. I want to know what magazines or newspapers that will help in my development as a writer/journalist?

A. If you are in the US read the respectable online newspaper like the New York Times online. Ask someone what the most respectable newspaper is where you live and read that. The New York Times online has some of the best reporters in the US and you can get everything from news to lifestyle and opinion all on the same site. The more you read, the more you will get a feel for the style and start to understand how a newspaper article is written.

A. Try a book called: Artist's & Graphic Designers Market 2008 (Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market) by Erika Oconnell. It is nothing but a huge book full of places to submit your work, including publications, and their submission requirements and contact info. The book runs about 20 bucks, but well worth the investment. You can always check your local library, they may have a copy :)

Are porn magazines mailed the same way as regular magazines?
Q. It is because magazines that are mailed have the address and information printed on the cover of it. If porn magazines are mailed just like that then mail mans can look at porn magazines?!?!
Asked by IDK? - Sun Jan 4 15:54:01 2009 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. generally, most "adult-themed" magazines (not necessarily porn, it could be a lingerie catalog) are delivered in a plain brown envelope, with the address sticker on the outside of the envelope, not on the magazine. Some "adult-themed" magazines are mailed in a colored plastic sleeve (dark black or blue to prevent the cover being shown, yet the title may be seen through the clear part of the plastic at the top) You will notice this too if you look at a magazine rack in a conservative book store. Some titles which may appear innocent to you, will be sealed in plastic, so that only the title is seen. magazines such as Maxim, High Times, all of those stupid magazines with bikini-clad models by motorcycles (I've never understand the appeal… [cont.]

What happens to unsold magazines on the stands?
Q. If there are say, 5 more unsold April issues, and the May issues come rolling around, in say, supermarkets, groceries, magazine stores, bookstores etc., where (and what) happens to the unsold magazines? Does it get recycled, sent back or what? Thanks in advance for your help.
Asked by Rahzel - Sat May 23 01:43:06 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sometimes places with waiting rooms ask for them or libraries. Mostly though they get recycled I strongly doubt many places send magazines back as it doesn't really have a purpose, it costs money and its inconvenient.

How do you donate magazines to a hospital?
Q. I have a lot of teenage magazines from about 4 years ago which I don't need anymore, they are in pretty much mint condition so it seems a shame to just chuck them in the recycling box. I'd like to donate them to my hospital. (They never have any teen magazines there, they're always Saga or Eczema Society ones). How would I go about doing this? Just put them in a box and take them to reception? Thanks.

Q. HI, I am just starting out on a small venture of hand made products and I wanted to get my products promoted in magazines. I am interested in small articles that talk about new finds etc. How do we get the attention of those magazines? Do I send them my samples and pray for the best or is there a more sure fire way? I am talking about magazines like Oprah, Living, etcor any popular lifestayle magazines. I am guessing that once recommended, these products get great sales.

What happens to postage-paid magazine insert cards that fall out of magazines in transit?
Q. Magazines are often full of small insert cards, usually 3x5 or 4x6 inches, that are postage-paid reply cards. These can be for subscriptions, reader information, or third-party ads. Some are glued or stapled in, but many are just loose. They stay in place only by pressure and static electricity. If you give a magazine a good shake (sometimes you must rifle through the pages), they fall out. The post office delivers millions of magazines every day. Some of these insert cards must fall out. What does the post office do with them? Do they deliver them, and charge the magazine (who has pre-paid the postage)? Or can they somehow screen out the blank ones, and discard them?

If your magazine has glued backbone, then you will have glued in cards. if your magazine has a saddlestitch, then it will have little metal "staples" holding it together (including all cards inside). There are also "Blow-in" cards. these are the cards that are shot loose-leaf into magazines. the design is so that when you open the magazine, the card falls out so that you pick it up and look at it. cheap easy and effective. How do I get english magazines sent to a friend in Japan inexpensively?
Q. My friend moved to Japan with her husband about 5 months ago for his job. She's happy, but misses the comforts she's grown to know. Mostly, entertainment, like magazines. Cosmo, Elle, People, etc.. The problem is, they sell for about $20 per magazine over there. I would love to send her a subscription, but can't find a way to send it to her address in Japan.
Asked by Apoed - Mon Feb 2 13:58:57 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You have some choices. We had our mail forwarded to us monthly. You can have your friend setup a PO Box at a Mailboxes Etc or similar business. Subscribe to the magazines and have them sent to the PO Box. The people who run the store would compile all of our mail and magazines and send them to us in Tokyo twice a month. We prepaid the PO box for 1 year and also left them a balance of $50 for forwarding our mail. When the balance became low, they would send us a note with the mail and then we send them more money via electronic check. The magazines will arrive a little later, but she will be happy. We did the same for books and also Amazon.com sends books, but not DVDs to Japan.

How do magazines sell ads to big companies?
Q. Do magazines have to go through agencies to sell ads to big companies. If the magazine is the company's exact demographic, how does the magazine reach the bigger company?
Asked by Chanel - Wed Jul 30 21:15:08 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Big companies generally book their print advertising months in advance though agencies. Those agencies are generally the ones with the decision-making powers. Thoese agencies will take much into account when placing bookings, including things like readerships figures and independent sales auditing to make sure they get the best value for money for their client. They also use outside organisations that measure the penetration of titles - information that publishers rarely get the chance to see or question. If you're a big magazine than you can expect to get big advertisiing but if you're anything less than big it will be hard. Good luck.

What happens to partially filled magazines?
Q. In video games such as Counter-Strike and Call of Duty, when the player reloads his gun when the magazine is not empty, it seems as if the old magazine is thrown away. As this can be seen as a waste of ammunition, it makes me wonder what soldiers actually do in the field. Do they throw away partially-filled magazines, hold on to them, or just shoot until magazine is empty?
Asked by JISG - Thu Jul 23 00:14:30 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In the field when you switch out a magazine that has been partially emptied you try to save it in your ruck. When you are out of combat for a while you reload those partial mags. If you are moving too fast then the mags just fall where they are and are left there. Video games aren't anything like real life.

What is a great way to organize magazines in a bedroom?
Q. I pretty much have a subscription to just about every magazine on the planet. From Allure to CosmoGirl to Lucky and back again. . I need a cool way to organize all of the magazines I have in my bedroom. Book shelfs are too small, and keep in mind I do like to read them occasionally so storage containers/boxes won't work. Also, I'd like them to match the decor of my room, which is a mixture between old Hollywood glamour and vintage. I've tried just about everything so please help! :] Thanks.
Asked by conseeted_xx - Sat May 19 13:05:18 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. my suggestion is.. continuous book shelving built on all corners of the room or on four corners of one wall...this is inspired from the glamourous dressers of hollywood icons. you can put old issues on top--the upper corner of the wall-- and the latest issues on accessible side corners.

Asked by Ya dig? - Wed Dec 24 16:44:14 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Look inside to see if there are any advertisements for other magazines. Go to their website and request a catalog (make sure it says free). You can also search Prom Dresses online and see what websites come up and do the same thing. If you're not familiar with Alloy.com or Delias.com I suggest you go there and check it out. You can get free catalogs there as well and sometimes in their dress section they'll have prom dresses. You might have to wait till it gets closer to prom to see a lot of advertisements and dresses that are in stock at different places/websites.
