Prepress is the term used in the printing and publishing industries for the processes and procedures that occur between the procurement of a written manuscript and original artwork, and the manufacture of a printing plate, image carrier, or (traditionally) forme, ready for mounting on a printing press.

In today's prepress shop, the form of delivery from the customer is usually electronic, either a PDF or application files created from such programs as InDesign or QuarkXPress.

CMYK to 100 percent one color?
Q. Got a note from prepress here, your file came over in over in very low resolution. It was in in cmyk/ You will need to convert it all to 1/color. I got this message from our printing company.. I have a file, its a letterhead and its green but then the color is in CMYK. how will i change it to 100% 1 color in photoshop? thanks!

A. Grayscale would be one color. If you are talking spot color, you can do a Layer Mask over a Grayscale layer or convert to Duotone. Make sure your colors are Spot. Process colors print CMYK. Good Luck!!

Would a company hire a graphic designer who never went to school for it?
Q. I went to a 4-year school as a Theater major. My portfolio is decent, but I know very little about prepress and production techniques for print. Also, I'm not really experienced in Dreamweaver, AfterEffects, or Flash. I do however know Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign pretty well-- but I know nothing about actually getting things printed, besides putting the setting to CMYK. I'm just wondering how likely it is that I could get hired as an intern or an entry-level position at a typical ad agency or media business.

A. It is do-able. It all comes down to your portfolio, really. It is good that you know those programs, they are what you need. I would recommend getting a good book on prepress, there are some really great ones out there that can explain the basics. Try to get an internship, you will learn a lot of those details that fill in the blanks in your knowledge. Work for free if you have to, you will at least make connections that come in handy when you are looking for job references and learn a lot of tricks and techniques.

To Graphic Designers: I'm teaching a course in prepress. What subjects do you think I should cover?
Q. Assuming I've covered the obvious: CMYK and RGB, DPI and LPI, Color. color space, fonts (and thier problems), bleed and trim sizes... can you think oof anything else?

A. Kerning, 'less is more' design(white space), press difficulties of heavy solid ink coverage, trapping variations based on materials, electronic file transfer protocols, photo retouching/adjustment and I'd touch on screen printing, flexo and ink jet printing briefly just so they understand other types. Sounds like fun!
