Artforum is an international monthly magazine specializing in contemporary art.

Publication

The magazine is published ten times a year, September through May, along with an annual summer issue. Characterized by its 10½ inch square format, with each cover devoted to the work of a single artist, the magazine is widely known as a decisive voice in its field.

As well as in-depth articles and reviews of contemporary art, the magazine features book reviews, columns on cinema and popular culture, and numerous full-page advertisements from prominent galleries around the world.

History

Artforum was founded in 1962 in San Francisco by John P. Irwin, Jr. The magazine moved to Los Angeles in 1965 before settling in New York in 1967, where it maintains offices today. The move to New York roughly coincided with a shift in the style of work championed by the magazine, moving away from late Modernism and towards Minimal Art and Conceptual Art and providing a platform for artists such as Robert Smithson, Donald Judd, and Sol LeWitt. Sister magazine Bookforum was started in 1994.

Do you think this is an interesting idea for a novel?
Q. It's about a man and his interactions with four women: His wife, a former editor for ArtForum magazine, whom he abuses; his quasi-mistress, a former Carmelite nun; his friend, a cocaine addict; and his wife's friend and co-worker, a young, impressionable artist. It's written in third-person, but focuses much more on the women and their interactions with the man and each other, than the man -- although his thoughts, feelings, and motivations are periodically explored.

Where can I get some old magazines?
Q. I'm an art/advertising student who collects old magazines, and am looking for someone who has old magazines laying around collecting dust and would like to contribute them to a good cause, or is looking to sell them (preferably the former!). The ones I have collected so far include: The Saturday Evening Post, Time, Life, True, Future, ArtForum, Art in America, Art Review, National Geographic, Architectural Digest, etc. I would really appreciate any help, and assure you they will be put to good, creative use. Thank you.
