Art on Paper was a bi-monthly art magazine published from 1996 to 2009. The magazine's editorial scope included limited-edition prints, artists' books, drawings, photographs, and ephemera.

History

Art on Paper magazine was founded in New York City in 1968 as The Print Collectors Newsletter by Paul Cummings. Judith Goldman was the editor. Within a year, Cummings sold it to Jacqueline Brody, who published it until 1996.

From the start, the title The Print Collectors Newsletter, was a misnomer. The newsletter covered limited-edition prints -- from the Renaissance to the present -- but it also published on artists' books, multiples, ephemera, and photography. An issue typically included a feature story or interview, industry news, reviews of recently released prints or photographs, auction reports, and book reports. Contributors included Holland Cotter, Richard Field, Nancy Princenthal, and many others.

In 1996, Gabriella Fanning, the former editor of the art magazine Contemporanea, purchased The Print Collectors Newsletter. She changed the name to On Paper, converted it to a journal format, and expanded its coverage to include drawings. Two years later, in 1998, she changed the publication's title and format changed again, this time to a full-color glossy magazine titled Art on Paper.

Fanning sold the title in 2004 to Darte Publishing LLC, a company established by the magazine's then editor, Peter Nesbett, and two partners. Darte Publishing published "Art on Paper" through December 2009, when the magazine ceased publication.

Ideas for a good art history paper topic?
Q. I have an art history paper that has to compare/contrast two pieces from the MET or MOMA from the same culture--either depicting different subjects from the same time period or same subject from different time periods. Any ideas on two pieces I could use that would be easy to compare an contrast?

A. Try comparing Greek to Late Roman works. Each culture had it's own take on the human body. Romans like more individualized art (portraits), whereas the Greeks had very stylized characters. Make sure you know what culture each piece is really from. The Romans were really fascinated by Greek art, and so they copied vast numbers of Greek pieces. A lot of what people consider Roman sculpture is actually just copies of Greek sculpture. You could also do different time periods in Egyptian/Mesopotamian art. They kind of worked the same way the Greeks and Romans did.

What would be a good topic for an Art History paper?
Q. I have to write a 2000 word research paper for my modern art history class and I have no idea what to write about. The prof is rather pompous too which makes trying to decide on a topic more difficult because he expects it to be something more than just a paper on a piece of art or an artist, he gave an example of "the effect of photography on painting", so it has to be something like that. Any suggestions? Thanks

A. Christo and Jeanne-Claude are widely known for their public art projects. In some of the most famous works, they have wrapped various objects and structures in large sheets of fabric, securing the wrapped structures with rope. Their projects have been both big and small, and include the Wrapped Coast, Little Bay, Australia, 1968-69, in which a mile and a half stretch of seashore was wrapped in erosion control fabric, and The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Paris, 1975-1985, in which a twelve-arch 1607 bridge and its accompanying street lamps, sidewalks, and curbs, were wrapped in golden polyamide fabric. The artists have also created entirely new structures, such as Running Fence, Sonoma and Marin Counties, California, 1972-76, a twenty-four and a half… [cont.]

What are some possible art history research paper topics?
Q. There are so many possibilities I don't know where to start. My original question was "How has history affected art?" but it's too vague. I need something more specific and I have no idea what to choose because there's so many topics.

A. People make art about what they know, and time changes everything. Did you have a specific period in mind? Or were you just going to generalize? Very early art depicted the people hunting game. It was their lifestyle. The Egyptians also painted what was familiar to them, the Nile River, its wildlife and business practices. The Greeks were obsessed with form and were fascinated with the concept of supernatural heroes. Rome depicted its life-like rulers. In the middle ages the plague swept through the land and death or dying became an object of their artwork. Since about the late 19th century, art has taken on new forms. Impressionism seems to almost depict a lack of time, as if a passing glance alone were recorded. And in modern times many… [cont.]
