Winesburg, Ohio By Sherwood Anderson?
Q. I need to find background information about the novel Winesburg, Ohio. Why was it written, what was happening in Anderson's life at the time, what was happening in the world at the time, what influenced the novel? I can find what was going on in his life and the world at the time of the novel, but does anyone have any information or links that that can help me with the other parts?
Asked by Megan - Sun Jan 8 15:22:24 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's been awhile since I have studied the novel but I will tell you what I know. Anderson was a huge fan of William Faulkner. Anderson was heavily critisized for his writing because he wasn't necessarily writing "inside" the lines. Some of his stories are definatley ahead of the time period and that is a major point you need to take into consideration. There is a book called the Informers. I can't remember the authors name right now but you should be able to find it at any book store. It is a contemporary version of Winesburg, Ohio. This might help you do a compare contrast. Sorry I couldn't remember much but hopefully I helped a little bit.

What are the similarities authors use in these books? Waiting, Winesburg Ohio, The Awakening, Road from Corain?
Q. What are the similarities the authors use of literary techniques in these books, like imagery, symbolism, irony, etc. "Waiting" - Ha Jin "Winesburg, Ohio" - Sherwood Anderson "The road from Coorain" - Jill Ker Conway "The Awakening" - Kate Chopin Also, what are the unique features of each of the four novels? Like point of view, dialect and such. I need answers asap!! Can you give me more detail about the symbolism part? And what about the feminism part?
Asked by Kidddddooo - Sat Sep 5 00:24:30 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. im so sorry, ive only read the awakening but i can tell you that she uses birds as symbolism, there are a lot of french words mixed in because theyre from new orleans (dialect), and some of the characters are creoles (of french decent). the author slowly introduces edna into love with another man, which awakens her. throughout the book, she goes through many awakenings. she learns to swim, she discovers herself and notices her own body for the first time, and she realizes her position in the world. the book was written ahead of its time, before feminism had really emerged. hope this helps. also try

What is the point of Literature class?
Q. They force us to read garbage old books and short stories that evidently have obvious underlying meanings to them, but I can't find it. Can anyone explain why we have to read Willa Cather, Sherwood Anderson, and other boring author's books?? Why can't they let us choose books that we want to read?
Asked by johnny - Wed Nov 4 20:23:50 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That is so right. They complain how no kids like to read but they make us read stupid books like Great Expectations and expect us to like it. We should read more cool books like Speak.

Can you name me a book publisher who would be interested to mentor a young 'Indi' novellist?
Q. The authors work can be looked up on: The young man is very talented and his ambitious goal is to step into the footsteps of Jack Kerouac, John Fante, Joseph O Connor, Sherwood Anderson, Monique Proulx and Dany Laferriere.
Asked by Toby - Thu Nov 9 15:21:57 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are so many novelists out there that book publishers don't have to go to the trouble of mentoring anyone. They receive hundreds and hundreds of unsolicited manuscripts every day, some good and some bad. If your aspiring novelist is serious about his work, I suggest that he look into finding a legitimate literary agent. An agent will read his book and let him know honestly if the work is any good, will give him ideas on how to make it better, and will shop the novel around to prospective publishers. But do research any agent you consider working with, because there are people out there who will take advantage of hopeful young writers.

Literature help with The Egg and The Glass Menagerie!?
Q. What are the similarities and differences in the symbols, motifs, or themes of The Egg by Sherwood Anderson and The Glass Menagerie? Also how the characters alike? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Asked by ILoveSky - Sun Mar 29 14:31:28 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm writing a paper on this as well, a couple key things are that -both narrated the by sons, while the glass menagerie is a play, Tom still narrates the setting in between scenes. this allows an easier view of their perspectives instead of their parents. This causes their parents actions to seem more unrealistic, especially for the son in the egg, as he is young, so he takes a juvenile perspective on his parents. -Parents both go to extreme lengths to reach their goal. however, it is not both parents, rather, only the mother in the glass menagerie and the father in the egg. the father in the glass menagerie isn't even present, while an image of his character is still portrayed. and the mother in the egg seems more of a follower of her… [cont.]

Oral Presentations in my English Class?
Q. We've read a short story in English Class (The Corn Planting by Sherwood Anderson, if it matters.) And we must orally present the story in front of class as a group. I have two questions. The first, vaguer question is this: I have a lot of information to present, but I have to keep it interesting. It's not like I can do a skit or anything (those are boring, anyways) so how do I keep my audience interested? I have to compare the story to the both the works of Flannery O'Connor and the earliest American Settlers. I have an idea of what to say, but I have no idea how to say it. Do I just stick the comparisons in at random times? I don't feel like I can just mix them all together. >_< Thanks for any help.
Asked by David S - Thu Sep 13 19:47:59 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Try to keep the information quick, simple, with little unnecessary detail. Use your voice to help, and don't just be monotone throughout. Use hand gestures, and just do what you think would be interesting if you were watching! Put your comparisons in chronological order, so it flows. Usually if it sounds right to you, it will sound right in your presentation. Just make sure you make sure everyone understands what it is about! Good luck! :)

Asked by mike m - Thu Mar 13 23:43:03 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would say that they /did/ sleep together. In the beginning of the chapter it says that "it was not yet 8 o'clock." It was after 10 o'clock when George returned to town. I don't think that they were talking in a corn field for two hours, if you know what I mean. I believe that this passage further states the case. Pay /close/ attention to the capitalized words or phrases; they indicate satisfaction and confidence. "When George Willard got back into Main Street it was past ten o'clock and had begun to rain. Three times he walked up and down the length of Main Street. Sylvester West's Drug Store was still open and he went in and bought a cigar. When Shorty Crandall the clerk came out at the door with him he was pleased. For five minutes… [cont.]
