A. I hope this helps you. The work explores the theme of loneliness and frustration in small-town America. Anderson's writing often seems disjointed and tentative, a style that lends itself to the half-conscious thoughts and raw emotions of Winesburg's residents and their inability to express their deepest hopes and fears. The townspeople are grotesques, stunted morally, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually, and they are inarticulate. They seem to gravitate toward George, telling him their strange, often sad, stories in the hope that, in writing the stories of their lives, he will be able to impart dignity and meaning to their personal struggles and experiences. The chapter "Paper Pills" recounts how the misshapen apples - the grotesques of… [cont.]

I have some questions about the story (stolen day) by Sherwood Anderson?

A. I suggest you flush that book down the toilet and read some real estate or stock market books. If you still insist, you could always try reading the book.

Winesburg, Ohio By Sherwood Anderson?
Q. I need to find background information about the novel Winesburg, Ohio. Why was it written, what was happening in Anderson's life at the time, what was happening in the world at the time, what influenced the novel? I can find what was going on in his life and the world at the time of the novel, but does anyone have any information or links that that can help me with the other parts?
Asked by Megan - Sun Jan 8 15:22:24 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's been awhile since I have studied the novel but I will tell you what I know. Anderson was a huge fan of William Faulkner. Anderson was heavily critisized for his writing because he wasn't necessarily writing "inside" the lines. Some of his stories are definatley ahead of the time period and that is a major point you need to take into consideration. There is a book called the Informers. I can't remember the authors name right now but you should be able to find it at any book store. It is a contemporary version of Winesburg, Ohio. This might help you do a compare contrast. Sorry I couldn't remember much but hopefully I helped a little bit.

A. I am a fan of Arthur Miller and Sherwood Anderson, both very fine writers indeed. As for Bukowski, I suggest that there is much better and more interesting American poetry from the period, and you would ultimately be better served with the likes of Allen Ginzberg and the other more "traditional" beat poets and fiction writers, and don't forget Bob Dylan. Being into Bukowski is cool, yes, and hip, but his work will never make the Norton Anthology of Poetry, I'll wager. No offense, because he's quite an interesting writer, but I think that finally his life was more intriguing than his written work.

What are the similarities authors use in these books? Waiting, Winesburg Ohio, The Awakening, Road from Corain?
Q. What are the similarities the authors use of literary techniques in these books, like imagery, symbolism, irony, etc. "Waiting" - Ha Jin "Winesburg, Ohio" - Sherwood Anderson "The road from Coorain" - Jill Ker Conway "The Awakening" - Kate Chopin Also, what are the unique features of each of the four novels? A. im so sorry, ive only read the awakening but i can tell you that she uses birds as symbolism, there are a lot of french words mixed in because theyre from new orleans (dialect), and some of the characters are creoles (of french decent). the author slowly introduces edna into love with another man, which awakens her. throughout the book, she goes through many awakenings. she learns to swim, she discovers herself and notices her own body for the first time, and she realizes her position in the world. the book was written ahead of its time, before feminism had really emerged. hope this helps. also try

Q. They force us to read garbage old books and short stories that evidently have obvious underlying meanings to them, but I can't find it. Can anyone explain why we have to read Willa Cather, Sherwood Anderson, and other boring author's books?? Why can't they let us choose books that we want to read?

A. I'm writing a paper on this as well, a couple key things are that -both narrated the by sons, while the glass menagerie is a play, Tom still narrates the setting in between scenes. this allows an easier view of their perspectives instead of their parents. This causes their parents actions to seem more unrealistic, especially for the son in the egg, as he is young, so he takes a juvenile perspective on his parents. -Parents both go to extreme lengths to reach their goal. however, it is not both parents, rather, only the mother in the glass menagerie and the father in the egg. the father in the glass menagerie isn't even present, while an image of his character is still portrayed. and the mother in the egg seems more of a follower of her… [cont.]

NEeD HELP here... "The man in the brown coat"?
Q. the setting? and what does it do with a brown coat? ..written by sherwood anderson
Asked by jackson . - Wed Dec 12 06:58:00 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Sherwood Anderson "A Meeting South," and "Dark Laughter" are both short stories, one to do with Anderson's friendship with William Faulkner and the other with New Orleans, if the two topics can be separated. "Winesburg Ohio" is a collection of short stories that are considered Anderson's finest. Other works by him are novels. You can read about him and a bit about these works in the link above (and I would if I were you; transcribing things is sometimes inaccurate)... But to read the stories themselves I would have to go to the library, and I was just there-- so am not due back for four weeks. See if Wiki can help. Put Anderson's name in the search box. If that is not enough, the library surely will be. Ask a reference librarian… [cont.]
